The place where your photographs are published!

Dust off your camera and show us something you photographed. Email us your news, sports and “slice of life” feature photos for publication in the Herald-Whig Between The Lens. Our staff photographers will select and post photographs from each day’s submissions. Be sure to include your first and last name and an explanation about the photograph. To make these pictures easy to find in our archive, we will break it down and categorize your iReporter photographs in the following manner:

SPOT NEWS: Spot News photographs are from unplanned news events like auto accidents, fires, tornadoes, etc…..

GENERAL NEWS: General News is based on photographs from a news event, which involves prior planning like a city council meeting or school board meeting etc…..

FEATURE PHOTOS: Also known as “stand-alone,” “slice of life” or “found” photographs, are “candid” non-posed photographs depicting everyday life within a community. Sometimes whimsical or humorous, these photographs often include one or more people in the picture.

PICTORIAL: Photographs relying almost exclusively on artistic principles such as quality of light, color, and composition. Landscapes and nature photographs fall into this category.

PORTRAITS: Traditional, experimental and contemporary fine art portraits are welcome in this category. Think creatively.

SPORTS: Got sports photographs? Sports action and sports feature or non-action sports photos will be placed in this category.

Please submit only one photo per day. If you have any questions send them through the comment box, and we’ll get right on it.

Email photographs to: photos@whig.com

PHOTO SIZES: For best results, horizontal photographs must be 9 inches wide. Vertical photographs must be 7 inches wide. All photographs should be 200 dpi (dots per inch) jpegs. Thank you for following these guidelines.

Note: While we welcome photo submissions, we are looking for uncommonly unique photographs, for two reasons. We can’t possibly post every submission we receive, because of time constraints. Secondly, we are hoping to steer away from general pictures that don’t rise to a certain artistic, or newsworthy level. We realize we are being selectively subjective, but we are trying to avoid having an avalanche of pictures submitted that may be better suited for personal photo websites. At least 2 photographers will take a look at each photograph submitted and make a determination as to whether or not it will be posted. Just so you don’t feel like the “Lone Ranger,” we heavily edit our photo staff generated pictures, too. Yep, many of our own pictures don’t get posted either. Thanks for understanding.
