The Quincy High School girls volleyball team defeated O’Fallon 25-14, 25-19 in Thursday’s Class 4A Normal West Sectional championship. That means the Blue Devils (36-3) advance to play Benet Academy, located in Lisle, Ill., in Saturday’s Class 4A Normal Community Super-sectional at 5 p.m.
Here’s a look at the Benet Redwings:
- Benet finished second in last year’s Class 4A state tournament, falling to St. Charles East 23-25, 25-22, 25-19.
- Benet had never won a sectional title before last season’s state tournament run.
- The Redwings graduated five of their six starters from that team. Gina Finke, a 6-foot senior outside hitter, is the only returning starter from the 2008 squad, which finished 41-2.
- Last season Benet Academy defeated Edwardsville, the team that defeated QHS in the Quincy Sectional championship, in the Normal Community West Super-sectional to advance to state.
- The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reports that Benet Academy is 35-4 now.
- Maxpreps.com says the Redwings were 31-5 heading into Thursday’s match, which would make them 32-5. The site says Benet’s losses have come against Hinsdale Central 2-0, Joliet Catholic 2-0, Lemont 2-0, Mother McCauley 2-0 and Chicago Marist 2-1. Here is Benet’s roster.
